I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!

Where did summer go? It seems like as soon as school starts so does all the chaos and homework. With school now in session, it’s harder to spend quality downtime with the kids. I challenge you to make a commitment to eat at the dinner table together at least three times a week on school nights. This allows you and your kiddos to talk about their day and create a closer bond, but you and I both know nothing creates a bond like making ice cream together. Sure it would be much easier to run down to the store and pick some up for dessert, but we are talking about making memories here. Check out our easy homemade ice cream recipe.

Now you might be thinking, where do I have the counter space for an ice cream machine? Don’t worry. Our recipe requires two Ziploc bags: 1 pint-size and 1 gallon-size. Yes, that’s it! There’s no excuse not to make this with your kiddos one evening after school.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup milk

  • ¼ cup half and half

  • 1 tablespoon white sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup ice cubes

  • 3 tablespoons ice cream rock salt

  • Toppings (as needed)

Directions:

Combine the milk, half and half, sugar and vanilla extract into a pint-size Ziploc bag. If you are letting the kiddos help you with this part, check to make sure they have sealed the bag tightly. Reading a blog post on how to get ice cream makings out of the couch is NOT what you want to be doing next!

After you make sure the bag is tightly sealed, put the ice, rock salt and the bag you just made with the milk mixture into the gallon-size Ziploc. Again, make sure the bag is tightly sealed or this could get messy.

Here is where you are going to need your kitchen crew for sure! Everyone can take turns rocking the bag back and forth. Set a timer for 10 minutes. It may take a little more or little less for the mixture to start thickening so just check before you start pulling bowls and spoons out.

After your mixture is mixed and you have ice cream, carefully open the gallon-size Ziploc and take the pint-size bag out. Dump the salt and melted ice cubes in the sink. Before you open the bag and start digging in, get a wet paper towel and wipe off the salt on the pint-size bag. I don’t know about you, but I like my ice cream sweet, NOT salty.

Finally, give everyone high-fives for making homemade ice cream without making a (HUGE) mess! That’s pretty impressive. Whip out the bowls and spoons and enjoy your very own ice cream. If you are a topping-type person, bring on the crushed Oreos, chocolate syrup and marshmallows.

And there you have it. That is our easy-peasy homemade ice cream recipe!
